4/7/14

24 balls=19 runs.

After the rain delay and damp condition, finally the showdown of the World T20 between India and Srilanka began. The Indian team with Viral Kohli at the top of list as highest run scorer and beaten only once in the group level started as favorites. Whereas Sri Lanka as two time loser at the final but the only team beaten India in the earlier round started as under dogs.
Big finals are a cruel business, though, and history will remember Yuvraj's knock as much as it will Sangakkara's. Yuvraj was playing as if he is driving the car without insurance papers, doesn't want to be caught by the police for over speeding and fined also for no-insurance.India managed to score 35 runs in last 30 balls. By end of the 15th over were 95/2 with the most explosive batsmen of this type of cricket were at  the crease. But Sri Lanka, though, kept their wits, and gave Yuvraj nothing t0 score off. That too after Kohli had laced the otherwise frugal Nuwan Kulasekara for 6,4 and 6 in the

16th over to make it 111/ 2. That over featured another slip in the fielding when the fielder at cow corner was lobbed after misjudging a catch. Normally you would expect teams to fall apart at these times, but Sri Lanka produced four superb overs. (see pic)
India produced one of their slowest first 50’s in the tournament in the 10th over of the innings and also slowest 2nd 50. Yuvraj Singh, India's limited-overs terminator  for so long, came in at 64 for 2 in the 11th over, scored 11 of 21, denied the unstoppable Virat Kohli the strike left India with a very modest score 130 for four in 20 overs. At the start of the 18th over, Virat Kohli swished his bat in anger at the bowler's end as Yuvraj Singh played and missed at yet another delivery that tells the story well.
Sri Lanka faced a few anxious moments in the early stages of the chase but eventually overhauled the target with 13 balls to spare. The two retiring legends of Sri Lankan cricket as Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara certainly made it a ‘final to remember’ as the champions ended their T20 careers with  memorable WCT20-cupp.

Dhoni: "Well I think in the middle overs our batsmen tried their best to get going but it was one of those days where we couldn't get the boundaries. Only Virat was batting well at one end. They executed their plans well. Most of our batsmen aren't those who play the scoop over fine leg and they executed their Yorkers very well. Malinga has a sling action and it becomes more difficult to pick up those Yorkers. It was a perfect game for Sri Lanka. The last one, one and a half years, Kohli has been exceptional.

In their final T20 appearance for Sri Lanka - Sangakkara and Jayawardene tasted World Cup success with victory in the final match against India and  insured their place in the history.  An interesting tweet of the evening.
